Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts Endorse Coogan for Senate

BOSTON -- The Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts are pleased to announce their endorsement of Michael J. Coogan, candidate for State Senate of the 1st Bristol and Plymouth district.

Coogan received the unanimous endorsement of the statewide union at their February meeting in Fall River attended by several hundred members from across the Commonwealth.

“Michael Coogan has a strong record of public service within the local community, the US Army and the Fall River Fire Department. He’s proven himself time and time again as a veteran and firefighter, and the PFFM is proud to endorse his candidacy,” PFFM President Robert B. McCarthy said.

“We, more than most others, know firsthand the fearless courage, integrity and dedication Mike brings to the job,” McCarthy continued. “He’ll bring that same courage, integrity and dedication to the State Capitol, and rest assured, the people  in the 1st Bristol and Plymouth district will be well served and proud to have him by their side.”

“I very gratefully and humbly accept the endorsement of my fellow firefighters. My colleagues represent the kind of hard-working, selfless, courageous and bedrock citizens we all need to be in this time of economic uncertainty and political cynicism.  I would like to thank President McCarthy and the rest of the Executive Board for their support, along with the members they represent , who have put their faith in me and my campaign,” Coogan said.

“I promise them and the voters of the 1st Bristol and Plymouth Senate District to work tirelessly to live up to their voiced ideals of 'courage, integrity, and dedication.' I will honor their endorsement by serving the people of the district to the best of my ability during the election campaign and, once elected, during my tenure in office,” Coogan continued.

A 21-year member of the Fall River Fire Department, Lt. Coogan is currently President of the Fall River Firefighters Union, a member of the Fall River Retirement Board and Chairman of the Fall River Group Insurance Advisory Committee. A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, and having attended Bristol Community College and Southeastern Massachusetts University (UMASS/Dartmouth), he holds a BS in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University. He is also involved in civic activities and serves on the Board of Directors of the Fall River Municipal Credit Union and the Fall River chapter of the Habitat for Humanity. Coogan served in the US Army honorably. He and his family reside in Freetown.

The Senate District is made up of the City of Fall River, and bordering towns of Somerset, Swansea, Westport, Freetown, Lakeville, and Rochester.

The Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts represent more than 12,000 professional fire fighters from across the Commonwealth.  More information about the PFFM can be found at www.pffm.org.
